Coquet High School students and teachers were celebrating the release of A-level results this morning, marking a major upturn in passes and grades.
A number of youngsters achieved the highest possible A* grade in English, Maths, Chemistry and Design Technology, while the pass rate leapt to 96 per cent, compared to 87 per cent last year.
And the ratio of pupils gaining two or more A2 grades was also up, from 76 per cent in 2009 to 84 per cent this year.
High-flyers Sam Stewart and Kirsten Butcher were at the top of the class, both scoring highly.
Sam achieved two A* grades, one A and another A at AS-level.
The 18-year-old, from Red Row, has won himself a coveted place at Loughborough University to study mechanical engineering.
"I didn't expect this at all," said Sam. "I checked the university website before coming in to get my results and I saw that I had enough points to be accepted.
"I was really surprised by my grades."
Daniel Mossman, from Belvedere Court, gained an A*, A and C in Art, Product Design and Engineering.
"I checked whether I had got my university place this morning, but it was undecided," he said. "That made the anticipation even worse.
"I found out about five minutes ago that I got in to Northumbria University to study architecture, so I'm really pleased.
"It's a huge relief after two years of hard work."
Paige Roberts, from Warkworth, achieved a B and two Cs in Art, English and ICT, which will now see her at York St John to train in primary education.
"I've always wanted to be a teacher," she said. "My results were better than I needed, so I'm really happy."
Christian Harvey, from Gloster Park, took an A and two Bs in Product Design, English and ICT.
"It was a big relief because my course requires a CCB," said Christian, who is going to Northumbria University to study product design.
"I was quite confident because of my coursework, but I was very nervous this morning."
Liam Coulson, from Percy Street, is now off to Leeds Met to study product design after gaining passes in Geography, Biology and Product Design.
"I wasn't too nervous but I wanted to get the envelope open as quickly as possible to see what I had got.
"I'm really pleased with my results."
